Travel Insurance - 10 Tips

Often, travel insurance comes last on our list of things to do before we travel, sometimes it is often forgone altogether too. Perhaps because we like to believe that accidents always happen to others – not us. However, sometimes things do go wrong.

Baggage or money can be misplaced, schedules could change, flights may be missed or you might even fall ill or be injured during your travels. This is when travel insurance is crucial. Many a time it is your travel insurance that enables you to continue your journey in case of unforeseen emergencies such as these – and if you cannot, you can be content knowing that you’ll receive the necessary treatment or be taken home safely if required.

Thus it is essential that you spend a percentage of your trip-planning time attaining a good travel insurance deal. The dilemma is how do to decide on a good travel insurance policy!

Here are ten things you ought to consider when choosing travel insurance:

  • 01 - Does the policy provide adequate cover for any medical eventuality and repatriation?
  • 02 - Does the policy provide a 24-hour emergency service/assistance?
  • 03 - Does the policy offer a full refund if the trip is cancelled or cut short for any reason?
  • 04 - Does the cancellation cover start immediately?
  • 05 - Does the policy cover all activities and sports that you might do? (This is especially important if you plan to do any “extreme sports” because many policies do not cover activities, such as bungee jumping and sky diving).
  • 06 - Does the policy cover personal liability, in the event that you accidentally cause injury/damage to others and/or their property and they sue you?
  • 07 - Does the policy offer reimbursement of legal expenses if a damage claim needs to be made?
  • 08 - Does the limit for stolen, lost or damaged possessions adequately cover what the items are worth?
  • 09 - How many children are covered under a family policy?
  • 10 - If you are traveling regularly during the year, would it be cheaper to take out an annual policy rather than single-trip cover each time?
